WinLoG Contaminated Sediment Core Example

A complete environmental sediment-core record combining water depth, continuous vibracore runs, recovery and compression, sediment stratigraphy, segmented analytical samples, redox and field observations, laboratory results, criteria status, and a continuous core-photo column.

SC-01 Contaminated Harbour Sediment Core documents a 10 ft vibracore collected in Hamilton Harbour, Ontario, beneath 10.6 ft of water. Five continuous 2 ft runs capture the transition from oxidized surficial silt through black organic sediment and impacted clayey silt to blue-grey glacial clay.

The validation report records Passed status, 100% completeness, Good quality, an 85% confidence score, zero warnings, and zero errors.

What This Sediment Core Example Shows

Sediment Stratigraphy

  • Oxidized olive-grey silt
  • Black organic silt
  • Dark-grey silty clay
  • Grey clayey silt
  • Blue-grey glacial clay
  • Graphic patterns and descriptions

Core Runs and Recovery

  • Five continuous 2 ft runs
  • Recovery from 76% to 92%
  • Compression from 5% to 15%
  • Clear polycarbonate liner
  • Stainless-steel core catcher
  • Water-interface depth datum

Environmental Sampling

  • Five segmented samples
  • Metals, PAHs and PCBs
  • Lead and mercury results
  • Criteria exceedance status
  • Redox and sulfide values
  • Odour, sheen and gas observations

Photo and QA/QC

  • Continuous photo by depth
  • Photo aligned with stratigraphy
  • Two-sheet continuation
  • Sample preservation notes
  • Decontamination records
  • Passed automated validation

Continuous Core Photography

The core-photo column follows the entire recovered interval from 0 to 10 ft and remains aligned with the graphic log, sediment descriptions, run boundaries, samples, field observations, and analytical results. The two-page layout continues the photograph cleanly at 5 ft.

This makes the log useful for checking colour transitions, organic-rich zones, laminations, mottling, shell fragments, disturbed sections, and sample boundaries without separating the photographs from the interpreted record.

Validation Results

The completed log passed automated validation with 100% completeness, Good quality, and an 85% confidence score. The report contains zero warnings and zero errors, confirming that the run, sample, observation, laboratory, criteria, and depth records are complete and internally consistent for this example.
